A 44-year-old man was airlifted by county helicopter to Hilo Medical Center in critical condition Sunday afternoon after a reported accident in the Boiling Pots area of Wailuku River above Hilo.

A 44-year-old man was airlifted by county helicopter to Hilo Medical Center in critical condition Sunday afternoon after a reported accident in the Boiling Pots area of Wailuku River above Hilo.

According to a written Hawaii Fire Department statement, family members of the man told rescuers the man had slipped, struck his head and fell into the river.

The county helicopter deployed rescue divers, who recovered the victim from the water and put him aboard the helicopter.

Twelve units, including the helicopter, rescue units and a medical unit, responded to the 2:57 p.m. alarm.
